As Peace Week kicks off, our communities in southeast Queens that were at the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak this past spring continue to struggle with recovery. NYC saw a 167% increase in shootings in 2020, largely in the second half of the year. LIFE Camp has been at the frontlines responding to this increased violence and the needs of various communities in NYC at risk to gun
violence through violence interrupter programs, therapeutic wellness, employment programs, and the Cure Violence model.
During this year's Peace Week, the Teach A Man To Fish Foundation is generously TRIPLE MATCHING all donations that come in to support LIFE Camp's work in gun violence reduction! If you would like to support with $1, $5, $10, $20 or more, your donation will be immediately tripled, and those funds will go directly towards saving lives, and rehabilitating lives that have been
destroyed through bullets. You can donate here if you are able and would like to!
It's humbling and daunting to be the co-Chairperson of the board of LIFE Camp, and I serve this organization as best I can without the experience of what it is like to grow up and live in a community that has been historically ravaged by gun violence. LIFE Camp accomplishes what it does with an extraordinary and dedicated group of people who are committed to ending
gun-violence not just in NY, but throughout the country.
On this day commemorating the life of Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King, the remembrance of engaged, non-violent activism, is foremost in my mind.
Dr. King said in his "I Have A Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, that:
"We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force."
These words that he spoke were reminders to his brothers and sisters of all colors that our destinies are all intrinsically intertwined, and that:
"We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead."
With peace and love,
Eddie
