In contemplating the need for sacred spaces, I was inspired by a recent email from my colleague and friend, Nick Heath, @thebreathingdiabetic:
"In The Mindful
Body, Ellen Langer, Ph.D., describes an incredible study. Participants were led into an empty room. Beforehand, one of three things had happened:
Meditators had meditated for 45 minutes and then left.
People had watched a stressful video for 45 minutes, then left.
Or the room was just empty for 45 minutes.
Participants entering after the meditators or stressful video watchers
found the room more appealing and enlivening <—that’s pretty neat.
But wildly, only the group entering after the meditators improved their reaction time in a mindfulness test.
As
Dr. Langer summarized, “These mysterious results suggest that somehow our mindfulness leaves a residue in the air and as such may affect the mindfulness of others.”
For all who have spent time in sacred spaces, we've experienced palpable differences in the energy or atmosphere of those spaces. It's interesting to read and think
about how we can purposefully and consciously create sacred spaces simply by virtue of the power of our thoughts and intentions.
In the Yoga texts we'll often read that the practice of non-violence should be reflected in our words, thoughts, and deeds. It seems like this idea is deeper than "thought begets action," but that our
thoughts leave behind traces of, as Dr. Langer says that will leave subtle impressions in the minds of others. Positive ones, of attention and kindness.
Filling spaces with traces of kindness seems like a pretty good thing to try to do.
Yours,
Eddie
