Special Event:
Surya Namaskar Mantras
Sunday, January 29th, we will hold a very special ritual at the Broome Street Temple in honor of Ratha
Saptami, the birth celebration of the Sun of our solar system. Priest Prakash Bhat Ji will chant the 132 mantras of the Aruna Prasna, also known as the Surya Namaskara Mantras. After each section is chanted, a prostration is done, similar to a sun salutation, but slightly abbreviated. Participants are encouraged to join for this ceremony—you do not have to do all of the prostrations, but could commit yourself to doing 12, 27, 54, 108, or all of them. The amount is not as important as your
presence and awareness within the ritual. The puja will be held at 6:30am EST, and will be in-person and online. It will take about two hours to complete. The event can be attended online through the zoom link on the temple website, which can be found HERE.
Weekly Schedule Update
Our Saturday
9am class will be held instead on Sundays at 9am EST for the next seven weeks while the Yoga Education Collective pranayama teacher training is occurring, and the Wednesday One Hour Asana (OHA) practice has shifted to 7am instead of 6:30am.
The OHA practice is comprised of things
that I am currently experimenting with or using in my own practice, and so is a glimpse into how my personal practice is changing over the years. You can check out this past week's class HERE.
In this class I explore different ways that we can strengthen and stabilize the body while creating a deep sense of inner calm and peace, which should be the outcome of an asana practice. I have been investigating a variety of texts over the years
that I draw practices from, as well as from my own experimentation. This past week we did several leg and back strength-type postures, and no sun salutations, but simple mobility movements that mimic much of the range of motion that you find in sun salutes. Check it out, see what you think! Variation in life and in movement is important. It's important to have discipline, it's important to be consistent, but with movement it's important to not get too locked into repetitive motion without
variation over long periods of time. Our bodies like a little variety, like seasons. That's how they grow.
